Do You Need Calculus for Med School? The Signs That Something Is Going Wrong

Most U.S. MD programs do not require a dedicated calculus course, and the Association of American Medical Colleges states in its MCAT mathematical-concepts list that “an understanding of calculus is not required” on the exam. A planner still has to match two separate lines on each target school’s prerequisite page: a math line that may name calculus, statistics, either, or neither, and a physics line that may ask for a year of physics, a semester of physics, or calculus-based physics without ever listing Calculus 1. Merging those lines is the sign that the plan is already off.

Do you need calculus for the MCAT?

No. The AAMC’s “General Mathematical Concepts and Techniques” page, part of What’s on the MCAT Exam?, lists the math a science-section question may use and then prints this limit: an understanding of calculus is not required, and a periodic table will be provided. The same sentence appears in the AAMC print outline (media file 9261). Calculus concepts tested on the MCAT, as that standard names them: none.

The named math is algebra and trigonometry, not derivatives or integrals: linear, semilog, and log-log scales and slopes; significant digits and estimates; metric units, including metric-to-English conversion when a factor is supplied, and dimensional analysis; probability, proportion, ratio, percentage, and square-root estimations; Algebra II-level exponentials and logarithms (natural and base 10), scientific notation, and simultaneous equations; sine, cosine, tangent and inverses, sin and cos at 0°, 90°, and 180°, and 30°/45°/60° right-triangle ratios; vector addition and subtraction and the right-hand rule, without dot or cross products.

Statistics is a different column. AAMC Skill 4, “Data-Based and Statistical Reasoning,” asks examinees to use mean, median, and mode; range, inter-quartile range, and standard deviation; random and systematic error; and statistical significance levels and confidence intervals. Skill 4 is listed at 10 percent of each of the three science sections, approximated to the nearest 5 percent and varying by form.

Section clocks, from the AAMC What’s on the MCAT Exam? overview (Students & Residents site, June 2026) and the same outline’s section tables: Chemical and Physical Foundations, Biological and Biochemical Foundations, and Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior are each 59 questions in 95 minutes; Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills is 53 questions in 90 minutes. The overview table sets total content time at 6 hours and 15 minutes and total seated time at about 7 hours and 30 minutes, not counting check-in.

Introductory physics sits in one science section at 25 percent. Calculus sits in none of them.

Which medical schools require calculus, and how many terms?

There is no single national calculus rule. Harvard College’s Mignone Center for Career Success writes that “currently around 60 medical schools require one or two semesters of mathematics (college math, calculus, and/or statistics)” and that “around 20 medical schools require one semester of statistics.” Princeton Health Professions Advising’s 2022 class-of-2026 sheet put the math-requiring group at “over 50,” with “about 20” asking for statistics. The offices agree on statistics and disagree on the broader math count. Neither figure is a calculus-only total. The AAMC’s 2026 MSAR coursework extract is school-by-school and publishes no national sum.

Washington University and Baylor each require at least 90 undergraduate semester hours, independent of the course lists. Stanford requires a U.S. bachelor’s degree or equivalent. UCSF expects a baccalaureate and caps community-college transfer at 105 quarter units. Harvard Medical School and Johns Hopkins do not publish a 90-hour floor here.

Johns Hopkins is where two official texts disagree. The AAMC’s 2026 table codes calculus at 3 credit hours required and statistics at 3 credit hours required. The School of Medicine’s 2023–24 catalogue still described mathematics as “calculus or statistics, one year (minimum of 6 semester hours).” That is an or against an and. Washington University’s 2026–2027 page asks for one year of calculus, “differential and integral,” and allows statistics or biostatistics to replace one semester; the AAMC table assigns 6 semester hours to calculus and 6 to physics, numbers the school page does not print. Baylor refuses AP, IB, CLEP, and dual credit for required work. Harvard’s Pathways math line is encouraged, not required. UCSF’s application-process page says “semester or 2 quarters” of physics, which is not the same length as the policy’s one semester.

Do medical schools require calculus-based physics or a calculus course?

Those are different tickets. A calculus course teaches derivatives and integrals. Calculus-based physics uses calculus as a language. A school can demand the second without listing the first.

Harvard Medical School is the cleanest printed split. Pathways requires one year of physics; AP credit that leads to an upper-level course may cover one semester. HST requires the year of physics in college and “strongly encouraged” as calculus-based physics. That HST sentence is the source behind the related search “medical schools require calculus based physics.”

Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, on the AAMC 2026 table, requires 8 semester hours of general college physics with laboratory and does not print “calculus-based.” The undergraduate campus is stricter. Pre-Professional Advising’s Guide One for Fall 2026 tells Homewood students that Calculus 1 and Calculus 2 are co-requisites for General Physics 1 and General Physics 2. The Krieger School e-catalogue for Fall 2026 entry prices that sequence at 5 credits a term with lab: AS.171.101 (4) with AS.173.111 (1), then AS.171.102 and AS.173.112, 10 credits for the year. Summer at Hopkins describes AS.171.107 as “calculus-based general physics” at 4 lecture credits. Calculus 1 and Calculus 2 (AS.110.108 and AS.110.109) are 4 credits each. A Homewood student on that sequence carries 10 physics credits and 8 calculus credits as co-requisites. The School of Medicine asks for 8 physics hours and, in the 2026 AAMC coding, 3 calculus hours plus 3 statistics hours.

Washington University requires a year of physics and a year of calculus as separate bullets; labs are “recommended but are not required.” Baylor’s 2026 page does not require a physics course. UCSF requires physics and does not require calculus. Stanford recommends both and requires neither as named courses. The Mignone Center notes that Physical Sciences 2 and 3 recommend Math 1b or equivalent, a college co-requisite, not HMS listing Calculus 2. Harvard Medical School does not publish a credit-hour figure for its one-year physics requirement.

What are the signs that a premed calculus plan is going wrong?

  1. Treating MCAT physics time as calculus time. Chemical and Physical Foundations is 95 minutes and 59 questions, with introductory physics at about 25 percent of that section. Calculus is not a tested AAMC concept.
  2. Adding Calculus 2 because a physics sequence lists a calculus co-requisite. Johns Hopkins undergraduate physics pairs Calculus 1 and Calculus 2 with the general-physics year. The School of Medicine’s AAMC row is 3 calculus hours, not two 4-credit terms.
  3. Copying an HST physics note onto a Pathways, UCSF, or Baylor list. Harvard Medical School prints the calculus-based physics encouragement under HST. Pathways requires a year of physics without that label. UCSF’s 2025 policy is one semester of physics and no calculus course.
  4. Using AP Calculus to close a school that refuses AP for required work. Baylor’s 2026 page states that AP courses “will not be accepted for the required coursework.” Harvard Medical School accepts AP scores of 4 or 5 for some chemistry, physics, or math credit if a higher-level course follows; AP cannot fill biology or the writing year.
  5. Finishing calculus and skipping statistics. The AAMC tests statistical reasoning and does not test calculus. Dean Richard Aronson, director of health professions advising at Amherst College, and William Loinaz, professor of biochemistry-biophysics, physics and astronomy, state that students who place out of MATH 111 “have satisfied the calculus requirement for medical school” and “don’t have to take intermediate or multivariable calculus,” and that “in recent years medical schools have become increasingly interested in seeing a statistics course on the transcript over an advanced calculus course.”
  6. Assuming Stanford or UCSF hides a calculus floor. Stanford’s page says there are no specific course requirements. UCSF’s 13 May 2025 policy lists biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and physics, not math.
  7. Treating two Hopkins documents as one. The 2023–24 catalogue’s “calculus or statistics” year is not the 2026 AAMC pair of required 3-hour cells. A Hopkins file needs both courses, or a written ruling from that admissions office.

Remote diagnosis stops at the chassis. The school’s current page and the current AAMC table are the remote evidence. A registrar transcript is the inspection.

How should a planner check a school's math and physics lines?

  1. Open the target school’s current prerequisite page and the current AAMC MSAR coursework table. If the two texts disagree, keep both numbers. Do not average them.
  2. Record calculus terms, printed credit hours, and whether statistics or biostatistics may substitute. Write “hours not published” when the school gives only years or semesters.
  3. Record physics terms, credit hours, laboratory rule, and any “calculus-based” label, in a separate column from calculus.
  4. Check the AP, IB, and dual-credit rule. Baylor’s 2026 rule is a refusal for required work. Harvard Medical School’s AP rule is a documented 4 or 5, limited by subject.
  5. If the planned physics sequence is calculus-based, copy its catalogue credits (Hopkins physical-science year: 4+1 and 4+1, 10 credits) and compare them with the medical school’s physics floor, not its math floor.
  6. Add statistics if the AAMC table, the school page, or MCAT Skill 4 names it. Do not spend that slot on Calculus 2 unless the school named integral calculus without a statistics substitute.

A wet September morning is a poor reason to add a second calculus term.
